Chloe could see the pain in Jasper's eyes. He kept looking at her, pleading to be taken away from the horror that had become his life. We bought him that day and took him straight to our little herd of misfits and rejects. He slept for a month, he was exhausted from the pain and fear but knew he was safe, knew he was home with his herd.
Then he flourished and our family knew we had to do more of this work, so Jasper became the first of many.
Today, Jasper's Rest is a small, family-run sanctuary in rural Queensland providing a safe and permanent home for horses and animals recovering from neglect, hardship or simply old age.
We don't rehome our animals once they settle. Many arrive carrying years of stress, and the most healing thing we can offer is the promise that this is the last move they'll ever make.
Every paddock check, every brush, every full feed bin is part of that promise. It isn't glamorous work — it's daily, weather-bitten, early-morning, slow-moving work. But it's the work that lets an animal finally rest.
